Welcome to WWM. When Spring arrives a young man's fancy turns to... just about everything it seems. Initiatives involving men seem to be budding thick and fast. Men's health, socially excluded young men and fathers are just three of the areas in which we can expect some movement in policy and practice this year. To this end we asked David Bartlett of Fathers Direct to bring you up to date on practice and policy initiatives on fathers. David's 'macro' picture is complemented by Juliette Fardon's description of her newly started work with parents on 'bringing up boys'. Splashed across the media recently you may have noticed Adrienne Katz' research on "Tomorrow's Men" focusing on the dangers of social exclusion for some groups of young men. Adrienne has summarised some of the main findings of her work in talking to "Can-do and Low-can do" boys. The increasing breadth of work being done with men is illustrated by James Traeger's piece on 'Navigator' a professional and self development programme which is now running courses nationwide. Alan Richardson also describes how the founders of the Newcastle Men's Initiative have tried to blend self development with very practical initiatives. We end with an extract from our own recently published "Reading For the Future". Trefor Lloyd summarises the main findings and action points to have emerged from this joint WWM/Save The Children research. Neil Davidson Editor |
